The Excelsior Surgical Society included a group of 80 medical officers who met for the first time in 1945 at the Excelsior Hotel, Rome, Italy. The lecture honors both this society and Colonel Edward C. Churchill, who delivered the first keynote address at the meeting. He was a renowned surgeon served as a consultant to the U.S. Army in the Italian Theatre during World War II.
