We present a two-wedge current system linking the ionosphere and the magnetosphere during substorms. The solution consists of a classical substorm current wedge (SCW) located in the pre-midnight region just equatorward of the open-closed field line boundary while another three-dimensional current system is located in the post-midnight region well within the auroral oval. This allow for differences between the post-midnight and pre-midnight components wrt the temporal behavior; intensity; total current; and the magnetospheric source region. The NASA EZIE mission is designed to provide measurement allowing us to test the difference SCW solutions by assessing the spatial configuration and time evolution of the equivalent currents. We will present the background for these competing solutions and show EZIE observations of individual substorms.
