Marine cloud brightening is a climate intervention technique that would aim to reduce climate warming by injecting sea salt aerosol (iSSA) into the lower troposphere to increase cloud albedo. Climate modeling shows that the climate impact of MCB is strongly dependent on where it is applied, with some MCB patterns producing potentially undesirable climate responses. To more extensively examine where MCB might be applied, we conduct simulations perturbing fourteen different regions throughout the world’s oceans in three climate models. These models show that midlatitude regions tend to produce more cloud brightening, stronger cooling, and more uniform cooling than lower latitude perturbations. This suggests that the midlatitudes may warrant greater attention in future MCB research.
