In 2018, after recording the physics associated with standard reconnection within Earth's magnetosphere, the spacecraft of NASA's Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) mission uncovered a novel type of magnetic reconnection outside of the magnetosphere that only involved electrons in the plasma. Electron-only reconnection occurs at a higher reconnection rate and in systems where the heavier ions can interact with; a condition commonly found in turbulent plasmas. Galvanized by this discovery, we reevaluated key components of the standard reconnection rate model to develop a new analysis, explaining this smaller, faster, and more transient variant of reconnection.
