Remote sensing from satellites (i.e. 'SWOT') is now able to track changes in the surface elevation of relatively small lakes every few weeks, including those that have a water budget dominated by groundwater exchange. Analysis of SWOT data from groundwater dominated lakes can be used to indicate groundwater supply to for a range of surface water features at local to regional scales, especially in highly permeable sediments where lake water is efficiently replenished by groundwater. That application of SWOT data may be particularly useful in areas that lack extensive continuous groundwater level (i.e. water table) monitoring, and aid in the understanding of groundwater supply lags following precipitation drought.
