At Clovis Community College, we developed an interdisciplinary project that engaged community college art students. In collaboration with Arctic researchers Dr. Peter Ungar, Dr. Mary Heskel, and Dr. Aleksey Sheshukov, students were introduced to their multi-year, multi-pronged research effort involving earth system scientists, engineers, ecologists, and anthropologists. The primary objective of our project was to make this complex scientific research accessible to younger audiences while providing art students with meaningful engagement in environmental science. Over the course of the semester, students explored the interconnected nature of Arctic systems and learned how to visually and narratively communicate key research themes. This collaborative effort emphasized storytelling as a powerful form of science communication and as a gateway for students with less experience in STEM fields to gain scientific literacy and confidence. Students translated technical content into narrative form, deepening their understanding of scientific processes while producing engaging, age-appropriate educational content. The resulting comic book serves as an outreach and education tool designed to foster public engagement with Arctic research. This presentation will outline the project’s structure and outcomes, share student reflections, and highlight the broader value of art-science collaborations in supporting inclusive education and communicating urgent environmental issues.
