At Clovis Community College, we developed an interdisciplinary project that engaged community college art students in Arctic science through storytelling, comic book creation, and digital media. In collaboration with Arctic researchers Dr. Peter Ungar, Dr. Mary Heskel, and Dr. Aleksey Sheshukov, students were introduced to their multi-year, multi-pronged research effort involving earth system scientists, engineers, ecologists, and anthropologists. The primary objective of our project was to make this complex scientific research accessible to younger audiences while providing art students with meaningful engagement in environmental science. Over the course of the semester, students explored the interconnected nature of Arctic systems and learned how to visually and narratively communicate key research themes. They also developed technical skills using Adobe Photoshop to produce an illustrated science comic book aimed at middle school readers. This collaborative effort emphasized storytelling as a powerful form of science communication and as a gateway for students traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields to gain scientific literacy and confidence. The resulting comic book serves as an outreach and education tool designed to foster public engagement with Arctic research. This presentation will outline the project’s structure and outcomes and highlight the broader value of art-science collaborations in supporting inclusive education.
