Global climate models suggest that marine cloud brightening (MCB) can deliver substantial cooling. However, the climate response to MCB depends strongly on where it is applied. Here, we consider a novel MCB intervention scenario, in which MCB is applied in the midlatitude oceans, and conduct simulations in three models in which MCB is scaled up to offset greenhouse gas warming after 2035. We find that MCB can maintain temperatures at the target 2020-2039 levels and that it substantially reduces the spatial extent of significant temperature and precipitation anomalies, similar to recent SAI scenario simulations. We propose that this midlatitude MCB scenario serve as a basis for future model intercomparison protocols.
