Earth System Models were previously developed and run on a targeted supercomputer. The next generation of models developed by the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) will be released using software containers which are lightweight and portable. The workflow for building and running the models has been updated to allow seamless integration of containers. After being used, they will be uploaded to a container registry in order to allow them to be findable and accessible to the research community. Because containers can be developed on one computer and run on another, they offer increased interoperability and reproducibility for the scientific experiments run by the models.
