This presentation will share the results of a comprehensive citation analysis of peer-reviewed publications resulting from NASA-funded citizen science projects across all five of NASA’s science divisions (Astrophysics, Biological and Physical Sciences, Earth Science, Heliophysics, and Planetary Science), aiming to illuminate the academic reach, influence, and collaborative dynamics of participatory research. We are currently evaluating the impact of scientific publications that have emerged directly or indirectly from NASA-sponsored citizen science projects, as well as the frequency of citations to these publications by other authors. By quantifying the academic footprint of these NASA-sponsored citizen science projects, our citation study will demonstrate the scientific impact of the citizen-enabled scientific findings, moving beyond affirmation of the established robustness of these methods.
