Scientists use satellite data to estimate how much rain falls during tropical cyclones and where it is located. In this study, we compared two commonly used satellite rainfall datasets, IMERG and MSWEP to see how well they capture rainfall from tropical cyclones. We analyzed 26 storms that made landfall between 2014 and 2021. For each storm, we measured the area, shape, and direction of rainfall using mapping tools and applied statistical tests to compare the datasets. Our results show that MSWEP typically detects more compact and intense rainfall, while IMERG shows rainfall spread over a larger area. We also found that MSWEP’s rainfall is more often located to the southwest of the cyclone center, while IMERG’s rainfall direction varies more. These differences are important because they affect how we forecast floods and prepare for storm-related impacts in vulnerable regions.
