We’re developing new ways to combine data from multiple satellites to better measure tiny airborne particles called aerosols, which play a key role in climate change and air quality. Traditional satellite cameras give useful information about the amount and type of aerosols but struggle to show how they are spread vertically through the atmosphere. On the other hand, satellite equipped with lasers (lidars) can detect aerosol vertical layers in the atmosphere but need extra information to interpret their results fully. By merging these two types of data—from both low-orbit and geostationary satellites—we can get a much more complete and accurate picture of aerosol properties around the world. This helps scientists improve air pollution monitoring and build better climate models.
