Climate scientists need to verify that their computer models accurately simulate past climate to build confidence in future predictions. Climate field reconstructions using proxy data can do that, but it’s often difficult to assess how reliable they are prior to 1850 or so. We developed a new approach using three historically under-utilized data sources to independently validate climate models over the past 1,000 years:
