When sound in the atmosphere becomes very low pitch, it begins to be affected by gravity. Large volcanic eruptions can produce this type of sound and we show that recordings of it during the 2023 eruption of Shishaldin Volcano in Alaska can be used to estimate the amount of material erupted by the volcano. Information on the amount of material erupted, and the rate at which it is erupted, is of primary interest for understanding the processes involved in volcanic eruptions.
