To map areas at risk from large bedrock landslides, various techniques look for signs of gradually emerging slow landslides that appear for years before the present. However, we find that many catastrophic landslides come from places where there do not seem to be signs of deformation years before the failure occurs. This suggests we may need to rethink both the physics and the practical assessment approaches for these landslides.
