Geological maps are tools produced from planetary images to help scientists understand the geologic evolution of a planetary surface. Jupiter's volcanic moon Io had much of it's surface mapped by prior NASA missions, but its active volcanism requires frequent re-observation and remapping. NASA's Juno spacecraft obtained new images of Io's surface in 2023-2025 that enabled new mapping and recognition of new volcanoes, lava flow fields, explosive plume deposits, and mountains that were previously unrecognized.
