Education and expertise in geodesy—the science of measuring the Earth’s geometric shape, orientation, and gravity field—have been declining in recent decades. Through the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Geospatial Modeling Grant program, four lead universities are working to produce the next generation of geodesists. Additionally, the universities are conducting research supporting the modernization and use of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), the consistent system of latitude, longitude, height, and gravity throughout the U.S., which is defined and maintained by NGS.
