Paul Bierman, University of Vermont (First Author, Presenting Author)

Snow and ice have always fascinated me - a fascination that has driven my glacier and climate-related research interests for more than four decades. I am a geomorphologist and isotope geochemist by training, with a passion for deciphering the history both of landscapes and people. Our group's work on the Camp Century sub-ice core and the research I did to write my recent book, When the Ice is Gone (WW Norton, 2024, has given me a deep understanding of how important it was to build and maintain a diverse US Polar Science community -- starting in WW2 and continuing to this day. On the panel, I will use my perspective, from both the geologic and historical past, to argue why supporting, expanding, and diversifying the cryospheric science community is so important at this time of rapid climate and social change.
