Plasmaspheric hiss waves play an important role in Earth’s radiation belts. However, their origin has been debated. This study shows that these waves can be generated locally near the magnetic equator by electron instabilities. Using growth rate calculations and ray tracing, we demonstrate that the frequency and direction of simulated hiss waves match observations during several geomagnetic storms.
