Reanalyses are very important datasets for studying the atmosphere. At higher levels of the atmosphere they perform worse than at the surface because of the lack of data and observations in this area. JRA-3Q is the latest reanalysis by the JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency), which is supposed to improve on its predecessor, JRA-55. In this paper, we compare both reanalyses to see if JRA-3Q really represents the upper statosphere better than JRA-55.
