Water is essential for life, farming, and economic development. In Pakistan, especially in the Lower Chenab Canal (LCC) region of Punjab, groundwater is a key source for irrigation and local livelihoods. However, this vital resource is being used faster than it can be replenished. This study used satellite data, analyzed through Google Earth Engine (GEE) and ArcGIS, to track groundwater storage changes in the LCC area over 15 years. The findings show a clear and steady decline. For example, groundwater storage dropped from –79 mm to –4 mm in 2003 to much lower levels between –113 mm and –223 mm by 2016. The northern part of the region is experiencing the most severe depletion. To ensure accuracy, the satellite findings were compared with official data from the Department of Irrigation, which confirmed the same downward trend. This research highlights how combining satellite technology with on-the-ground measurements can help monitor groundwater more effectively. The results support smarter water management and align with the global goal of ensuring clean water and sustainable use of resources (Sustainable Development Goal 6). Protecting groundwater is essential for the region’s agriculture, economy, and long-term water security.
