We study the propagation of electromagnetic waves from the ionosphere to the plasmasphere and investigate the effects of the Earth’s magnetic field in ray tracing simulations. We present a new mathematical formulation of the ray tracing equations, in which the equations are expressed in an convenient manner to handle any magnetic field models, from the simple dipole model to the most advanced International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) model. This formalism is used to compute the different trajectories of a given ray according to the magnetic field model. We discuss the important differences found between the use of a dipole field and the use of the IGRF model.
