Waste management is a challenge in the Navajo Nation, where limited infrastructure often forces residents to travel long distances to reach landfills. Sadly, this can cause some to dispose of waste improperly, such as dumping it by the roadside, in arroyos, or washes. To address this, we've assembled a dedicated team of local residents, government agencies, environmental nonprofits, and scholars. Together, we have developed a plan to clean up these sites by removing over 4000 pounds of waste, engaging community volunteers, advocating for supportive policies, and planning to analyze soil samples for chemical pollution. Our experience demonstrates that communities have the power to improve their environment, particularly when guided by compassionate leaders and provided with the necessary resources.
