NASA needs to show how its satellite data benefits the U.S. economy, helps businesses make decisions, and improves disaster readiness. However, it’s difficult to track which companies actually use this data since many don’t publish papers about it. Building on previous studies, this research used a variety of methods to find out which private companies use information from the ICESat-2 satellite. The study found that ICESat-2 data is used by companies in real estate, forest management, data services, environmental consulting, and climate-focused fields. Many businesses use data products created by others, including maps, forest details, and carbon measurements, even if they don’t use the original satellite data themselves. The paper outlines methods for identifying these companies and explains how the data supports the economy by increasing revenue, lowering costs, and helping businesses manage risks. Overall, the research shows how satellite data products are valuable across different industries and contribute to the national interest.
