Despite rising sea levels, coastal populations and economic assets continue to grow. Though scientists have been studying future sea levels for more than 40 years, sea-level rise projections remain uncertain. Our analysis of published sea-level rise projections shows that critical hurdles remain to be overcome, including insufficient focus on sea-level rise projections beyond 2100 and substantial uncertainty surrounding the upper bound of future sea-level rise. In addition, the production of sea-level rise projection is concentrated in a small number of primarily English-speaking countries. At the same time, there have also been important advances by the sea-level rise science community in recent years, including the development of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change sea-level rise projections that better represent estimates of future sea-level rise from individual studies.
