Monitoring thermal areas in Yellowstone is important because to recognize and understand changes, we need to know what normal conditions are like. Because Yellowstone has so many thermal areas that are spread out over a large and mostly inaccessible region, we use satellite remote sensing to study them. Landsat 8 and 9 thermal infrared images acquired at night can measure the heat being emitted from most of the thermal areas and estimate how they change over time.
