A new classroom activity called “We’re All on the Same Boat” helps students learn about teamwork and science careers through the real-life example of people working on a research ship. Created during the 2025 School of Rock a professional development for teachers at sea aboard the R/V Marcus G. Langseth, this lesson introduces students to the many different jobs that make ocean research possible—from engineers and navigators to cooks and scientists.Students explore crew member profiles that include job roles, career paths, and hobbies to better understand how a team works together to support science at sea. The profiles were created using artificial intelligence (AI), making it possible to quickly and respectfully feature 16 different crew members.
Students then create similar profiles for themselves and build group diagrams that show how their own skills and interests can contribute to teamwork—just like on the ship.
This activity works well as a fun, get-to-know-you lesson at the start of the school year, but can be used anytime. It also offers a flexible model that can be adapted to other fields where teamwork is essential, such as space exploration or environmental science.
