NASA's FIRMS is a global wildfire monitoring system that shows how collaboration in Earth observation technology can improve wildfire science and management worldwide. The system serves users in over 220 countries by providing timely information about active wildfires.

Key Features:

  • Collects real-time fire data from multiple satellites, including both polar-orbiting and geostationary platforms

  • Delivers fire detection information within minutes to hours of satellite observation

  • Developed through partnerships with the USDA Forest Service and international organizations

  • Offers regional monitoring capabilities through collaborations with universities and European agencies

User Benefits:

  • Provides multiple ways to access fire data: interactive maps, email alerts, web services, and customizable downloads

  • Integrates with NASA Worldview imagery and other satellite data to give fire managers comprehensive situational awareness

  • Works across borders and jurisdictions to support global wildfire management

The FIRMS project demonstrates how government agencies and international partners can work together to build resilient fire management systems that serve communities worldwide, especially as wildfire seasons continue to lengthen globally.
