Geoscientists are trying to characterise and quantify the enrichment of rare metals like rare earth elements (REEs) and high field strength elements (HFSEs), and how they become concentrated in certain rocks called carbonatite-alkaline complexes. This study focused on the Amba Dongar Carbonatite Complex (ADCC) in India, examining different types of carbonatite rocks, including those that are weathered. The researchers looked at how the minerals in these rocks changed and how REEs and HFSEs were distributed. They found that as carbonatite rocks weathered, their mineral content shifted, with more barites, ilmenite, K-feldspar, and clay minerals appearing. Ferro-carbonatites (FC) had more REEs, while calcio-carbonatites (CC) had more HFSEs. Minerals like apatite and pyrochlore were key to understanding the rock's history and the formation of these valuable metal deposits. The study also revealed that fluorine-, aluminum-, and sulfur-rich fluids played a role in concentrating the REEs. Overall, this research helps us understand the processes that lead to the formation of economically important rare metal deposits in carbonatites, comparing the ADCC to similar complexes worldwide.
