The snowpack covering the arctic region is very important for the climate and the permafrost. However, models still struggle to simulate its specific stratigraphy: a light, thermally insulating, basal layer with a dense slab on top. The formation of the basal layer is usually attributed to fluxes of water vapor within the snowpack, which take matter at the bottom and move it to the surface. In the last few years, studies and campaigns have been aimed at advancing our understanding of water fluxes in snow, at implementing this phenomenon in numerical models, and at observing its influence on snowpacks in the field. First results indicate that the water vapor fluxes might not be sufficient to fully explain the basal layer of arctic snowpacks.
