Back arc rift initiation and extinction should be profoundly coupled to the influence of the subducted slab. This paper explores the potential details of this process, assuming two different models for extension (pure and simple shear) commonly put forth to explain rifts in the continental setting. Each makes testable definite predictions for the outcrop pattern and mineral chemistry of mantle rocks exposed in the rift.
