Artificial Intelligence (AI) is catalyzing transformative advances in Earth System science. By harnessing vast and complex datasets, AI offers innovative solutions that enhance our comprehension of intricate Earth system processes. NOAA and its partners are fostering AI innovation across mission areas. This presentation showcases a portfolio of AI applications drawn from projects sponsored by the NOAA Research Climate Program Office (CPO) involving a broad range of partners, demonstrating the tangible application of AI, from enhancing process understanding and predictions to informing decisions.Research examples include how AI is being leveraged to improve predictions and models leading to more reliable water resource management. Similarly, AI-driven analyses are informing sea-level predictions along the U.S. coast. AI innovation is being applied for satellite data analysis of emissions and air quality, and to more accurately simulate the atmospheric transport of wildfire smoke for air quality forecasting. These applications provide more accurate and actionable information for health risk mitigation strategies.
Finally, CPO efforts aim to build an AI-ready workforce through research, workshops, and partnerships. These initiatives are designed to expand access to AI tools and training, promote responsible AI practices, and foster broad collaborations with external partners.
