Whiteface Mountain (WFM) in northern NY State is the site of a historic mountaintop atmospheric observatory with an ongoing cloud water chemistry monitoring program that has been operating every summer (June through September) since 1994. Though long-term chemical analysis has been conducted, analysis on the microbiome is just beginning. Starting in 2024, environmental DNA was extracted from the cloudwater filters. DNA analysis was conducted to identify species of bacteria and archaea found in the cloudwater. Chemical analysis was conducted to identify concentrations of anions and cations, pH, conductivity, and total organic carbon. This study seeks to unite the microbial and chemical composition of clouds at Whiteface Mountain and add to the growing body of aerobiology work. Special notice will be given to sanitation methods, wildfire effects, and common microbial species found in the samples. Overall, this study will offer a glimpse into the early stages of microbial analysis of clouds at Whiteface Mountain.
