The United States economy demands a strong STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) workforce to compete in the global marketplace. Community college students are an untapped pool of intellectual talent in the nation, facing unique barriers to participating in research opportunities, which is espeically acute for those seeking STEM degrees and careers. The programs we have created at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) provide significant, integrated research opportunities for community college students each year in ocean sciences and engineering through paid, non-residential research experiences. They also provide comprehensive support for all student participants to increase students’ STEM identity and pursuit of STEM and ocean science and engineering career pathways.
