Methane measured on Mars at the surface and a few km above the surface in atmosphere result in different concentrations, higher at the surface and potentially no methane in the upper atmosphere. This could potentially be explained by an active methane destruction mechanism. However, the lifetime on methane on Mars is several hundred years, which is not sufficient to resolve these observations. We investigate a methane destruction mechanism proposed by Zhang et al. (2022) that works in the presence of UV (active only during daytime) and perchlorate (a salt that has been observed in the surface) in a model of the atmosphere to evaluate whether this mechanism can produce results consistent with methane measurements.
