The Cultural Connections to Alaska Science project (NSF #2201324) awarded in 2022 has partnered with Tribal organizations and school districts in four rural Alaska regions to collaborate on the development of place-based Alaska science teaching tools that highlight local priorities and topics. Educational videos and high school lessons are being developed in partnership with the Alaska Native Tribes in Kotzebue, Fort Yukon, Metlakatla and Kodiak. Once annually, members from all four regions gather for an in-person collaboration meeting known as the CCAS Summit. The gathering is held with the goals of selecting statewide topics for curriculum development, and refining work in progress. The Summit is designed to welcome ideas, wisdom, and knowledge from all participants--Indigenous people, education staff, and institutional researchers--on an equal table. Encouraging larger spaces of trust and sharing within co-production strengthens relationships and encourages authentic representation of Alaska Native students in the educational resources generated. This presentation will address the strategies, challenges, solutions, and Indigenous methodology incorporated for hosting this gathering of Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Bearers, language experts, artisans, hunters, educators, researchers, designers and scientists. It will explore lessons learned in facilitating healthy and trusting spaces for inclusion and sharing of knowledge and wisdom.
