Magnetic reconnection is a key process in space that moves energy from a magnetic field to the surrounding plasma. The Parker Solar Probe spacecraft has been measuring the solar wind near the Sun and sometimes finds strong flows. When these flows are present magnetic reconnection seems to be less likely. We study possible causes of this effect with numerical simulations, with results that agree with observations.
