Access to clean and reliable water often reflects deeper issues of inequality in income, land, and political power. Water systems have long been shaped to support growth, often leaving out communities with less influence. This talk reflects on how science, engagement, and education can support more just and inclusive water systems, drawing on work in California.Despite being a global leader in agriculture and innovation, California faces major gaps in access to safe drinking water and sanitation—especially in rural and underrepresented communities. Climate pressures and groundwater regulations are forcing big cuts in water use, particularly in agriculture, with wide economic effects. Without deliberate attention to equity, these changes risk deepening historical patterns of exclusion.
I’ll share examples of community-driven efforts—like land repurposing, natural infrastructure, and workforce training—and reflect on how science and shared knowledge can help shift water management toward more fair and resilient futures.
