To protect deep‑sea habitats while permitting new uses like seabed mining, we need faster and less invasive ways to detect the species that live there. The DNA that organisms shed into seawater is a powerful clue, but it requires that we have complete reference libraries, good laboratory primers, and enough water from the depths where DNA is scarce. By adding hundreds of new DNA reference sequences from corals, designing probes that are specific to coral DNA, and filtering larger volumes of water with underwater robots, we can now identify far more species with far greater reliability. These improvements mean managers will soon be able to efficiently map sensitive habitats, check recovery after disturbance, and make science‑based decisions.
