When comets graze Jupiter they split apart and a few even strike the Galilean satellites. Because these are outbound they always strike the side facing Jupiter. We look for such cometary crater chains on the 'forbidden' hemisphere as possible evidence that the outer icy shell of Ganymede has rotated out of lock at some point in the past.
