Methane from farms is a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to climate change. We tested a new technology designed to destroy methane directly inside pig and cattle barns. The system uses special UV lights and a tiny amount of chlorine to trigger a chemical reaction that breaks down methane.
In our field tests, the system successfully removed up to 93% of methane from the air. As a major bonus, it also eliminated over 80% of the bad smells and another harmful pollutant, ammonia. This is important because ammonia can turn into an even more potent greenhouse gas in the environment.
Our findings show this is a promising way to simultaneously clean up multiple types of air pollution from farms, though we are still working to make the process more energy-efficient.
