Field trips help students connect what they learn in the classroom to the real world— but not all students can access them due to cost, distance, or mobility barriers. To make geoscience learning more inclusive and accessible, educators from Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University, and NASA’s Infiniscope project worked together to create a virtual field trip about volcanic landscapes in northern Arizona.Using 360° photos, videos, expert interviews, and interactive maps, we built a digital learning experience focused on Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and nearby volcanic sites. The virtual field trip is designed for students in introductory geoscience classes and allows them to explore real geologic features from anywhere with an internet connection.
This project gave educators and students a chance to co-create educational content while learning how to use new digital tools. It also helps instructors meet their teaching goals in large classes or when weather or transportation issues prevent in-person field trips. We hope this virtual resource not only improves student learning but also inspires more creative and inclusive ways to teach Earth science to a variety of audiences.
