Tropopause polar vortices (TPVs) are smaller-scale circulation features that are based near the tropopause. TPVs are to the development and evolution of Arctic Cyclones and ACs can lead to very rapid sea ice loss events (VRILEs) over the Arctic. The formation of TPVs remains to be investigated systematically. This study presents results from a compositing study using atmospheric reanalysis to determine what type of environments TPV form in. We find that smaller TPVs are associated with cyclonic Rossby wave breaking, while larger TPVs are associated with the reorganization of a preexisting larger-scale TPV.
