International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 405 was part of a global effort to study the ocean floor and learn more about Earth, including the planet’s history, changing climate, and the causes of natural hazards like earthquakes. Shipboard researchers were joined by a multinational team of science communicators who worked together to tell the story of the expedition. Each person brought different skills—such as photography, video, education, comics, blogging, and social media—to help share the science and daily life on the ship with people around the world. This presentation describes how the team was formed and trained, the tools and strategies they used to reach various audiences, and how this approach was different from past IODP outreach efforts, along with recommendations for how these methods can be used in other contexts.
