Local government agencies and community-based organizations (CBOs) are increasingly relying on environmental restoration, conservation, and green infrastructure to strengthen resilience against climate change. However, property owners often exploit the benefits of these environmental changes by raising rent and property values, making the local area unaffordable for marginalized groups (e.g. low-income, racial/ethnic minority, refugee/immigrant group), a process called Green Gentrification (GG). In this study, we learn preventions against GG through interviews with individuals across non-profit, government and academia who have navigated GG. We ask interviewees about their GG experiences then analyze interview transcripts for poor and effective examples of GG prevention. Our analysis reveals that community guidance and collaborations combining housing justice, political education, and community-led land management are essential for developing equitable environmental spaces. These results provide valuable insight on environmental integration strategies that do not perpetuate environmental inequities for underserved communities, an urgent necessity as more vulnerable groups disproportionately experience climate change. Following more interviews in the 2025-26 academic year, we will share results with our CBO, government, and non-profit partners to aid their ongoing climate resiliency planning. These results are applicable for any community partner organization (e.g. government, academia, and non-profit) seeking to equitably improve local climate resilience.
