We present first results from a new airborne imaging spectrometer called AVIRIS-5, which stands for Airborne Visible / Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-5. AVIRIS-5 collects light at 5 nm spectral intervals across the visible through short-wave infrared region, from 380 nm to 2500 nm. In its first year of operation, AVIRIS-5 has been used for a survey of critical mineral resources in the southwest United States as part of the Geological Earth Mapping Experiment (GEM-X) airborne campaign. AVIRIS-5 has also collected data over the Sierra Nevada mountain range as part of a long-term study of terrestrial ecology called the Western Diversity Time Series. We present the first results from this new imaging spectrometer to the scientific community.
