A number of different particle populations reside inside our heliosphere. Many spacecraft have probed the heliosphere at 1 AU (Earth's orbit) and far beyond, but only a few missions have been designed to specifically explore the inner heliosphere (inside 1 AU). Solar Orbiter is one of these missions, providing the opportunity to study different charged particle populations of non-solar origin, such as interstellar and inner source pickup ions.
