  • This study generated high-accuracy local climate zone (LCZ) maps at a 120m resolution in 30 China cities

  • Compact mid-rise had the highest surface urban heat island (SUHI) intensity in cold regions, while large low-rise showed the strongest SUHI intensity in warm regions

  • Vegetation was the most important factor impacting SUHI in built-up LCZs

  • The transferable LCZ mapping framework can be applied to other global cities for SUHI studies
