Young planetary systems often host a number of diverse proto-planets, some of which become rocky planets. We use theoretical arguments and numerical models to make predictions about how a solid crust forms on such planets. Our results suggest that an inhomogeneous crust forms due to the interplay of heat and compositional transport.
