We show that the main benefit of emissions abatement is to avoid large amounts of climate damage in the long term, and the main benefit of adaptation is to avoid more modest amounts of climate damage in the near term. When adaptation is used in conjunction with abatement, these two strategies work together to help avoid climate damage and increase consumption both for people who are alive today and for future generations.
